Our newest renovation project. This home has been neglected for a number of years. Leaking showers and tubs lead to extensive damage below. The October storm didn’t help with the landscaping and a vacant home doesn’t bode well for a sump pump that stops working. This should be a fun one. We will post some before and after pictures along the way. It is located in a great neighborhood, is structurally sound, and has 4 bedrooms with 2.5 bathrooms.

We have a challenge in bringing the look from 1970 to 2007, but we’ll get it done.

If you have a Kidde 1275 smoke alarm. Be prepared for a false alarm. Well, it might never happen, but based on the reviews of the Kidde 1275 at Amazon.com you won’t be the only one if your alarm does go off on its own.

Of course I am not writing this out of the blue. Many builders will install these units in new builds. They are inexpensive hard-wired smoke detectors. However, it isn’t uncommon for these units to be defective, or to go bad and go off in the middle of the night. Ours went off on Friday night at 3 AM, and then at 4 AM. I was able to find the offending unit by simply blowing up at it and setting the alarm off again. I can honestly say that you will probably not sleep as well with the feeling that your alarm will go off in the middle of the night.

Since this is a hard wired system, every detector will sound when the alarm is triggered. If you have young children, I can assure you that this is something that they will not forget. When this happened last year, we brushed it off as a one time event. My son, who was 3 at the time, kept his fan on for a couple of months because he thought that would stop the alarm from sounding.

One nice thing is that you can locate the offending alarm. It will be the unit that is blinking after the alarm goes off. In my case, I simply pulled the unit from the system. I was pretty certain that it was bad when I was able to set it off by simply blowing on the alarm from 5 feet away.

I write this review in hopes that this does not happen to you. If you are building, or outfitting your house with new smoke detectors, I would recommend that you avoid the Kidde 1275. It received 1 star out of 5 for a reason.

A friend of mine pointed out a real cool tool available at the Erie County website (erie.gov). The site is an internet mapping system. No, this isn’t like Google Maps, or Local from Live.com. It is much, much, much more. I have included a screen shot to show you some of the features and overlays. There is a nice search function that even allows you to search by name. Really. Are you wondering what Daniel Briere’s lot looks like, or where he lives? I am serious. You can easily locate this information. It is public record, after all.

One of the most useful functions, in my opinion, is the overlay of lot lines. This will show you the shape of a parcel of land or property in the county. This is especially useful when you are shopping for real estate and the listing agent doesn’t have that information available for you. You can use the flood plain overlay, a wetland map overlay and a number of other overlays such as school districts, and municipalities.

Do you prefer to view maps like you can at Google, with an aerial photo from a satellite? You can. In the left hand column, click on the selection to show the “2002 orthophotography” and click “refresh map”. You can use the “Pan” tool to drag the map.

The tools within the application take some getting used to, that is why I am linking to the help page as a start. Once there, click on the link that reads “Internet Mapping System”.

A couple of quick notes.

1. Pop up blockers will probably interfere with some functions. You should turn them off, or hold your ‘ctrl’ key while clicking on links within the map.
2. This works properly in IE (Internet Explorer web browser), but not in Firefox.

I don’t think that I could call this condo in Lancaster, NY a screaming “BUY”, but the asking price seems to be a bit below value for the condominium development that the unit is in.

Lancaster New York Condo for Sale - $134,900

At the time of this writing, the asking price is $134,900. Similar units in the Eastwood development go for much higher. The larger units have been known to fetch $160,000+. This is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom condo that has a built in garage. This is a perfect unit for a snowbird or someone who no longer enjoys the issues that a home brings.

If you are in the market for a condo in Lancaster, take a look. This is located close to Transit Road so you are able to get to everything very quickly. However, the traffic that comes from all of the commercial development nearby might scare some buyers away.
