A friend is shopping for a house and she asked a couple of questions. I figured that I would share since there are probably others that will have the same question.
Can you tell me what it means by hot water heat, baseboard heat. Is that old school? Also about how much do you think it would cost to put central air in a 2000 sq ft house?
Hot water heat uses hot water heated by a boiler. It is usually referenced as “hot water” or “baseboard” in a listing. Here is a picture of a modern “baseboard” unit.
When the home is older (approx. pre 1950), the hot water heat might reference a little older setup with cast iron radiators.
Both of these would be referenced by a Realtor as “Hot water heat”.
The cost for central air would depend a lot on the current setup. If it is a newer home with “forced air”, the cost might be $1500-$2500. If it is a forced air setup, there is already ductwork and a blower unit so there is no need to add those items. If it is hot water heat, they would need to put in new ductwork throughout the house. This is a pretty expensive proposition and I would expect that it be in excess of $5,000 for that job.
Call it a treasure, call it gross (as my wife did). We pulled an old wasps nest from an attic crawl space. The entire hive is about 24″ long. It is paper thin on the outside and has stacks of honeycomb structures on the inside.

This is a follow up to the previous post RTA Kitchen Cabinets and Vanities.
After placing a good sized order, from RTA Cabinet Store, I was contact to let me know that there were 2 items that would be delayed a few days (good communication). I let them know that it would be fine to ship the entire order once those arrived.
The cabinets are very solid. The finish has a slight variation from one batch to the next (as with most RTA cabinets) but in my application, that was acceptable. In fact, the cabinet that I am using is the Chestnut Maple Glazed. Since it is a glazed cabinet, the differences are hardly noticeable with an entire run of cabinets put together.
I would strongly recommend this company. I am happy to have found an RTA supplier who is close to NY. They are in PA so the shipping costs are reasonable and the transit time is only a couple of days.

I am working with a new cabinet supplier. They sell RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets for the kitchen and bath. I ordered a sample kitchen cabinet and was very pleased with the style and quality. If you are familiar with RTA cabinets, you will know what to expect. Plywood sides and solid wood drawer boxes are the norm. One feature that this supplier has is that the base cabinets come with a full plywood back. Not all RTA cabinets offer that. It adds a lot in terms of stability and can speed your job since you don’t have to worry about the wall behind the cabinet.
