I recently purchased laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators. Obviously, there are a LOT of flooring stores that sell the simple click together laminates at very reasonable prices. I was in search of a particular product, and maybe you are too. I wanted a more natural look, but didn’t want to pay too much for it. I was after a 3 1/2″ wide plank instead of the normal 7″ sizes. This is a bit more expensive, but the flooring went together easier since there was a smaller groove (3 1/2″) to create friction when clicking the pieces together. This was probably a time saver, but we were covering half of the traditional area with these strips.

Lumber liquidators (3801 Harlem Road, Cheektowaga) has a product called from “Dream Home - Nirvana” that was just what I was after. It is a 3 1/2″ strip laminate that offered 4 different colors and had the pad attached. This is a floating laminate floor that didn’t require glue. The strips came in 3 different lengths. This provided for very rich and natural look. The price was $1.99 per square foot. Keep in mind, this comes with the pad attached.

If you have ever finished drywall, you probably remember that it is messy and your job doesn’t always look like a pro did the job. The products that you use for the base (setting) coat and also the sheen of your paint matter.

This tutorial, or how-to, from rd.com is short and covers the techniques for each joint. Print it out, keep it with you and you will certainly end up with a more professional drywall job than if you try some DIY trial and error.

A couple of tips from my numerous drywall jobs:

• Use a flat paint. Flat paint will hide more of the blemishes in your drywall job. Anything that reflects light will show your flaws.
• Try to smooth your first and second coats of joint compound. If done properly, you will not need to sand until your final coat of compound is applied.

I had a question recently about product alternatives for Dryvit or Stucco. If you have seen a new commercial building going up, or have seen a transformation of an older building, you have probably noticed some of the products used to create a completely new look for an old structure.
